Middlesbrough will step up their efforts to sign Manchester United striker Alan Smith over the next few days.

Both United and Smith's agent have denied that Boro have been given permission to speak to Smith, with Red Devils chief executive David Gill claiming yesterday that "no firm offers" had been made for the former Leeds player.

However, Gill's Boro counterpart Keith Lamb is hopeful of pushing through a deal when Smith returns from their tour of Asia and claims a fee was agreed earlier this month.

Boro face competition from Everton and Aston Villa among possible others and Lamb said: "Our position hasn't changed.

United striker on his way

Manchester United striker Alan Smith is reportedly on his way to Newcastle for £6m if personal terms can be thrashed out.
The England international's time looks to be up at Old Trafford after three seasons and the Magpies are tipped to win the race to sign the 26-year-old ahead of Middlesbrough and Everton.
Boro have seen their interest snubbed by Smith despite getting permission to talk to the player, while it looks as if Everton's main deal this summer is going to be for Wigan left-back Leighton Baines.

Smith joined United for £7million from Leeds United but saw his Old Trafford career stalled by the serious injury he suffered in the FA Cup against Liverpool.
He will face competition from Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins and Shola Ameobi if the does end up at St James' Park.

With Sir Alex Ferguson insisting that he will not sell Gabriel Heinze, there is a strong possibility that the Argentine will be left to rot in the reserves for the next twelve months as punishment for his impertinence.

Sir Alex gave short shrift to reports that Liverpool had written to the Premier League, requesting their assistance to sign the defender, telling a press conference: "They can do what they like. We are quite confident about our position. Gabby is due back at training next Monday and, once we have a meeting with him, his position may become a little clearer."

According to The Guardian, with the mooted transfer to Anfield apparently doomed, Heinze now 'faces the distinct possibility of being frozen out at Manchester United' with Ferguson 'so appalled at the defender's conduct that there are misgivings within Old Trafford about whether the Argentina international should be considered for first-team action for as long as the dispute remains unresolved.'

'The key piece of evidence for Heinze is a fax, signed by United's chief executive, David Gill, and sent to the player's agent this summer, saying he could leave if United received a bid of ?6.8m. Although the club seemingly went back on this agreement when Liverpool came in for the 29-year-old, United will argue that they have a far more significant piece of paper in the form of a legally binding contract that ties Heinze to Old Trafford for another two years.'

Nicely put.

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has reportedly held talks with Manchester United's Alan Smith in a last-ditch attempt to lure him to Upton Park.

Smith is thought to favour staying in the north so Curbishley faces a tough task to persuade the Yorkshire man to relocate to London and snub a switch to either Middlesbrough, Newcastle or Everton.

The Evening Standard claims Curbishley is particularly keen on a swoop for Smith as he can play either as a striker or in central midfield in the absence of Scott Parker.

Ironically, Newcastle may beat the Hammers to the capture of Smith if Kieron Dyer moves to Upton Park

NEWCASTLE have opened talks with £6million-rated Manchester United forward Alan Smith.

The England international is understood to favour a move to St James' Park despite interest from North-East rivals Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Smith, 26, has fallen further down the pecking order at Old Trafford with the imminent arrival of West Ham ace Carlos Tevez.

Newcastle are also hoping to sign Sevilla's £5m-rated Serbian star Ivica Dragutinovic.

Goodbye Smith, Welcome Tevez

I have been tied up with a lot of work these days. So apologies for not covering the Inter-United game. Now that, plenty has been said and discussed about the game, not to mention our ever active comment threads, I will let it lie for the moment. Although, there certainly were some points worth dwelling on, which I will discuss in a separate post.

Anyway, moving on, this has been an eventful week, and a fan couldn’t have asked for more mixed feelings than he might be feeling now. First we have Rossi’s transfer and then Smith’s. Just when one thought we were going nuts selling strikers that we hear about the imminent transfer of Tevez. Yes, this is 99.999% certain!

(I think.)

But first things first. Alan Smith, after three seasons at the club, decides to move to Newcastle. This move itself has evoked a sense of ambivalence in me. On one hand, you had a fighter - a player who would never give up till the end, and on the other you had a player who scored 45 career goals in 233 games (that is, nine years) out of which just 7 goals were for Manchester United. Hardly the kind of statistic that would set a person’s heart racing. His most testing season would have been the one where he was converted to a midfielder. Sadly a horrific injury put paid to that. His readiness to change his position at a relatively advanced age showed what he was made of. His recovery furthered the notion that he was, indeed, the man of steel. All this made him worthy of wearing the shirt.

Although, with his limited abilities, it makes it impossible to give him a run in the side. So it was only fair that he was sold to a club that could give him a good run. However, I might not have expected him to move to Newcastle - a club already brimming with strikers.

Oh well, that’s probably the challenge a bloke like Smudger might relish. So cheerio Smudge, you will forever remain in the hearts of the United faithful.

Meanwhile, Carlos Tevez should certainly be unveiled in a United shirt, by Monday at the latest, pending formal ratification by the Premier League. To quote:
http://redrants.com/goodbye-smith-welcome-tevez/

{At least when Smith is gone we are going to have Tevez in our team we still do great with him i think }
Danaldinho

Yer And Do You Think Tevez Will Get Stuck In Like Smith Did
keano

i doubt it
but hopefully he'll score alot more goals

NoOnAn-2k7

from teamtalk.com

Newcastle have signed England forward Alan Smith from Manchester United on a five-year contract for a fee believed to be around £6million

The former Leeds player's time with the League champions was affected by injury and he managed only 93 appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Smith, 26, will join his former Elland Road team-mates Mark Viduka and James Milner and will compete with Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, Albert Luque and Shola Ameobi for a striking spot at St James' Park.

NoOnAn-2k7

he wont get a game there with his fitness!!
keano

he's gotta a better chance of getting a game there than he has here
NoOnAn-2k7

actaully he doesnt cos we only have two forwards that are fit and hes fighting against 5 players at newcastle.
keano

yeah but the quality of our two strikers is probably better than all of newcastles 5 put together
NoOnAn-2k7

yeha good point!!

Smith chose Newcastle for passionate fans
Newcastle United have completed the £6 million capture of Manchester United striker Alan Smith.

Smith, 26, has agreed a five-year contract and trained with his new team-mates on Friday.

Newcastle fought off competition from several clubs to sign Smith, who had been told he would not be offered a new deal at Old Trafford.

Smith said after signing: “The biggest thing for me is to get back playing regularly and to come to a place like this and to play football.

“Everyone already knows about how passionate Newcastle is, what their fans want to see, and how much they want success.

“It’s nice to come to a place where a manager is trying to build a team and build a squad to develop and push on further and he wanted me to be part of that. When someone says that to you its always nice.”

Smith could make his Newcastle debut alongside former Leeds team-mate Mark Viduka in a pre-season friendly against Sampdoria on Sunday.

Allardyce had already added Viduka, Joey Barton, David Rozehnal and Geremi to the squad since arriving at the club.
